In our research for these novels, we’ve observed a troubling trend of derision and dismissal directed towards the Otherkin community, both from the general public and even the LGBTQ+ community. Much of this criticism stems from the perception that one has scientific validity and historical context while the other lacks such foundations. While these discussions have their place, we believe it’s essential to pause and reflect on the broader implications of this discourse.
As writers committed to promoting acceptance and understanding of ALL forms of love and self-expression, we felt compelled to address this topic. Our intention is not to equate the experiences of these communities or any others nor diminish the importance of scientific validation. Rather, we aim to encourage introspection and empathy among our readers by using the contrast to highlight the need to examine our own beliefs before denigrating someone else—anyone else.
Through our urban fantasy novels, we invite our audience to look beyond ideological differences and recognize the shared humanity that unites us all. Whether one’s identity is rooted in scientific evidence or personal belief, every individual deserves respect and compassion.
In today’s ever-evolving world, discussions surrounding identity, acceptance, and love have become increasingly prominent and heated. It’s essential to examine the complexities of identity with sensitivity and respect. In this blog post, we aim to discuss the differences between them, emphasizing that while they both represent facets of human diversity, they are distinct concepts that should not be equated.
Firstly, the LGBTQ+ community—a vibrant and diverse collective of individuals whose sexual orientations and gender identities fall outside of societal norms. From lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals to queer, intersex, two-spirited, and asexual individuals, the LGBTQ2S+ community encompasses a vast spectrum of identities and experiences. Members of this community often face discrimination, stigma, and marginalization, making advocacy for their rights and recognition crucial in promoting equality and inclusion.
On the other hand, the Otherkin community comprises individuals who identify as non-human or as having a connection to non-human entities. This may manifest as an identification with animals, mythical creatures, or even inanimate objects. While the experiences of Otherkin individuals are valid and deserving of respect, it’s important to recognize that their identities differ from those within the LGBTQ+ community, although some may even identify with both!
It’s essential to clarify that these are separate concepts and should not be conflated. Each community faces its unique challenges and experiences, and it’s crucial to respect and honor the diversity within each group without erasing or minimizing their distinct identities.
In our novels, we strive to emphasize acceptance and understanding of all forms of love and self-expression. Whether we explore the complexities of LGBTQ+ relationships or look into the unique experiences of our otherkin characters, our goal is to foster empathy, compassion and thought among our readers.
It’s important to acknowledge that our novels are works of fiction and fantasy, meant to reflect on the state of the world today. Many individuals, regardless of their identities, face rejection and discrimination based on societal norms or beliefs. Through our storytelling, we aim to challenge these prejudices and advocate for a world where all individuals are free to love and express themselves without fear of derision, rejection, or hatred as long as they show the same respect for others.
Let us celebrate the richness of human diversity, embracing unique identities and experiences. By promoting acceptance, understanding, and empathy, we can help build a world where love truly knows no bounds.
